The guide frame integrates embedded brass or bronze wear strips, eliminating metal-to-metal galling between the slide and frame. Adjustable wedge blocks take up clearance gradually, allowing on-site sealing performance tuning even after many years of operation. The design transforms handwheel or actuator input into smooth vertical movement of the rectangular gate leaf, delivering bubble-tight shutoff when closed against a combination of bottom and side seals.

Actuation and Mounting Options

The rectangular penstock gate adapts to a range of actuation methods depending on installation depth and operation frequency. Manual rising-stem handwheels with geared drive boxes suit applications where the operator can stand on a platform. For remote or automated control, electric multi-turn actuators with 4-20 mA positioning controllers and torque limiters integrate directly onto the stem via ISO 5210 mounting flanges. Extended spindles with floor stands and chainwheels are available for deep chamber installations. Each actuator package is sized after calculating total thrust, including gate weight, friction from guide strips, and hydrostatic load.

Installation and Seal Adjustment

The frame embeds into concrete with the aid of anchor bolts cast into the secondary pour. After the grout sets, the slide is lowered and wedge-type adjustment bolts are tightened progressively until uniform compression is achieved on all sealing surfaces. The self-aligning design of the bronze wedges compensates for minor irregularities in the surrounding concrete face. Once set, the gate can be removed from above for inspection without dewatering the entire channel, as the frame stays fixed and only the slide is lifted out using the installed lifting mechanism.

Seals are field replaceable without dismantling the gate frame. The bottom seal profile locks into a dovetail groove machined into the slide edge, while side seals attach via continuous clamping plates. This arrangement maintains tight shutoff even when debris particles accumulate near the seating plane, because the elastomer profile deforms around small obstructions. The metal sealing faces with bronze overlay can be re-lapped in situ if any leakage develops over years of operation, further extending the gate’s useful life.
